After the highly anticipated release of the newest addition to the Borderlands series, and after the fiasco of Gearbox refusing to release pre-release codes to the UK and the drama of exclusivity on the Epic games store – it’s finally here! Here at Web-Systems, we’ve purchased the game and taken a look at this long-awaited sequel, and here’s what we think.

Familiar, But Not Repetitive

On first glance, nothing seems to have changed. You arrive on the familiar world Pandora, with an abundance of bandits and skags almost just waiting to be blown up, and the same self-deprecating humor and characteristic graphic style that made you fall in love with the game in the first place.

However, this time, everything seems far more polished. Each gun you hold seems to have its own sort of character, even while it’s not being fired (don’t worry, there’ll be more about guns later). Each grenade explosion feels more calculated and controlled than in the game’s predecessors, while maintaining the chaotic feel of out-of-control explosions that Borderlands has always had. Each character has you ecstatic to see an old face or excited to be delving into a new character’s back story. The game balances familiarity of old characters with refreshing new ones, as if they have always existed in the Borderlands universe.

Another massive addition to the sequel is the variety of new worlds that you get to explore. The transition between side quest and main quest has never felt so smooth with all these new, yet still familiar and Borderlands-characteristic additions.

Guns, Guns, and Even More Guns

No matter what review you read, and no matter how negative they get, there’s not one review of this game that can even start to complain about the loadout. Borderlands delivers, unsurprisingly, on its ‘one billion guns’ promise. It combines your favourite Borderlands weapons manufacturers with unique little touches that effortlessly add to the game’s character. Weapon loadouts and profiles seem to be seamlessly integrated into gameplay, so that all the chaos comes from the explosions that you’re creating.

Fun With Friends… Yet Again

Most of the pre-release reviews pride Borderlands 3 on its co-op abilities. IGN even says, “this is an adventure I could see myself happily undertaking again from scratch with a new character and a fresh group of friends.” And we have to say that we agree. All we can say is… Borderlands 3 keeps its specs low to keep it as inclusive as ever.
